Eco School Green Flag Award
Pupils at Glapthorn C E Primary School have been awarded a coveted Eco-Schools Green Flag
Pupils at Glapthorn Primary have earned an international accreditation this academic year, recognising their amazing work in making their school more environmentally friendly and raising eco-awareness in fellow pupils.
The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries
worldwide. Pupils at Glapthorn Primary used Eco-Schools’ tried-and-trusted seven-step framework to create positive change. Initially, a pupil-led Eco-Committee was established. This committee took responsibility for spearheading their school’s environmental initiatives, with support from Miss Elsom. They first conducted a thorough review of their school environment and curriculum, before developing a year-long plan of action.
The judges loved how our Action Plan shows that our Eco-Committee have carefully considered how they can involve their entire school in their planned Eco-Schools’ activities to achieve maximum impacts and raise awareness amongst their school community. They loved the range of activities that our Eco-Committee planned both indoors and outdoors:
- promoting recycling with awareness posters and bin labels
- anti-littering posters
- opening a Terracycle account and recycle4charity
- school and community litter-picks
- extra playground bin
- making bird boxes and feeders
- planting bee friendly flowers
A member of the Eco Council said, "I have really enjoyed being part of Glapthorn's Eco Council. I have enjoyed the responsibility for the school environment, I particularly enjoyed litter picking!"
The judges were impressed with our very visual and engaging board, promoting our work in a very attractive way and featuring our Eco-Committee members. They felt that was a great way to raise their esteem and make their schoolmates feel like they can approach them and get involved with your Eco-Schools work! They also said is was great example of layering in sustainability and climate change into your studies. They loved reading about how we firmly incorporated learning about global issues into the Science Curriculum in our school.
Congratulations to everyone for the great work you have managed to do, earning your Green Flag with style. You should all be very proud of your work and achieving the award!
